When I was younger, I built my identity around being "tough." I wrapped myself up in sharp hardness as if it were armor, thinking that it would protect me. But do you know what? That identity became a prison. It kept me from experiencing the very connections and belonging that I so craved.

It wasn't until my bio mother passed – suddenly, at 62 – that everything really started to shift. There’s nothing quite like death to make you realize that all that protective armor is keeping you from truly living.

It was only after coming to grips with everything that her death broke down in my OWN life that I was open to understanding something profound: Identity isn't fixed. It's not something handed to us that we have to accept. It's more like clay that we can shape and reshape as we grow.
